The engagement party arrives quickly, almost faster than I am ready for it, too. Money is never an issue in regard to speed. I can shell out currency faster than I can take a deep breath on most days. And it’s important for all of this to keep up a quick pace in order to keep immigration off my back and get married before my visa expires. But I can’t help feeling that the time is speeding away, that soon Laurel and I will be married, and then not too long after that, we will part ways as agreed upon. To be honest, I’m just not sure I feel the same way about doing that anymore.

After the night we spent together, I’m not sure that I really want to part paths in a few months post-marriage. And after seeing her around Alicia and watching how fond my daughter seems to be growing of her, too, I am having trouble thinking that this is all going to just end at some point.

But since I don’t know what to do about it right now, and since the immigration issue is still pressing, I need to continue on as planned and get married before I am deported.

I invited tons of people to the engagement party. Everyone from the company, tons of other colleagues and acquaintances from around the city, and even a reporter that I know with the local San Francisco press. I figure that it won’t hurt to get a few photos snapped, and it will be harder for immigration to argue the legitimacy of a quick engagement and marriage if it is plastered all over the local paper. Being a billionaire CEO does have its perks of notoriety. Sometimes that can work against me, but at times like this, I can call all the attention toward me that I want.

The party is a lavish affair, complete with mountains of expensive appetizers, top-shelf cocktails, and of course—me and Laurel putting on our best show in front of the crowd.

Everyone has a good time, and everyone here is now a witness to our engagement being legit. I fawn over Laurel, and it isn’t at all an effort to do so. She looks extraordinary wearing the designer dress that I got her for the event and showcasing the huge diamond on her finger. It isn’t even like trying to be romantic anymore since I already feel like being wonderful toward her. The more that I act as if I am in love with Laurel, the more I start to realize that I think I actually am.

It surprises me to think about it since I have always considered myself to be a perpetual bachelor and not ready to settle down, but I now think that I might really want this fake relationship to be real. I like being around Laurel more and more with each passing day. She is beautiful, smart, and kind, and the whole thing is entirely convenient. She is good with
